Naturally, it's a risky gambit, because the opposing team won't skate idly as you toss the ball to one another. You can also pass the ball to other players to keep it out of the other team's clutches. The evasion timing is fairly strict, but if you're attentive, you can juke the enemy and continue the lap. If, on the other hand, you find yourself in possession of the ball, you must use your dodge ability to evade incoming tackles. A successful tackle knocks down the target and forces a fumble, giving you a chance to claim the ball. Players not in possession of the ball can freely tackle members of the opposing team, and this tackle is quite potent. The opposing team hounds you constantly, doing its best to slap the stars out of you and snatch it away. Finally, a team that completes three laps with the ball can land a five-point shot, effectively winning the game with a single, skillful shot.Īs one can imagine, it's not easy to hold on to the ball.
So long as they do not lose possession, a player who completes a successful second lap makes the team eligible for a three-point shot. Unfortunately, the free-to-play PC game has less-than-optimal online connectivity and a barebones design that will hopefully be improved prior to the title's release. What Roller Champions does offer is a shockingly simple, yet surprisingly fun and addictive, multiplayer sports game with easy-to-understand controls that possess enough nuance to keep you engaged. In fact, there is very little Ubisoft's game has in common with Rollerball, or with most other sports video games for that matter. However, as far as the demo is concerned, there is no dystopian, corporate-owned, sports-oriented future in Roller Champions. So, when Ubisoft revealed that it was developing an arcade sports game called Roller Champions, my mind immediately jumped to said film. To be frank, I didn't know team-based skate sports existed outside of that cheesy 1970s film Rollerball. Some lag-filled matches during testing.Relatively bare-bones demo highlights the need for alternative game modes and venues.
